Today’s results have shown that the proportion of pupils reaching the expected standards in reading, writing, and maths was 61%, up from 60% in 2023. While positive news, this is still lower than the 65% who met the expected standard in all three subjects in 2019, before the pandemic.

Since this Year 6 cohort started primary school (2018/19) they have had to overcome many challenges. They began Key Stage 2 (KS2) in an environment of lockdowns, bubbles, and homeschooling. The after-effects of the pandemic and the subsequent cost-of-living crisis have impacted pupils’ learning and their mental health. This has been especially true in lower-income communities in the North, which have felt the negative effects these disproportionately. Further, a report published by the Children’s Commissioner published in March 2024 showed that, in 2022/23, 26,400 children in northern towns and cities had been referred to their Integrated Care Board with mental health issues – higher than anywhere else in the UK.

That’s why, despite the increasing pressure on school budgets, a great number of primary schools have continued to work with us to provide the additional support needed to set their pupils up for success in their SATs.

This year, our tutors have supported 901 Year 6 pupils in 51 schools across Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, and Merseyside ahead of their SATs. Each participating pupil received, on average, 12 hours of support in their tutoring subject, with 123 pupils accessing support in maths and reading.

Our Year 6 pupils have been positive and enthusiastic about their tuition. More than 900 KS2 pupils have completed our Pupil Voice survey this year, which tells us how they feel about tutoring and how it fits into their lives. We use the feedback from Pupil Voice responses to continuously improve our tuition.

We also receive unprompted feedback about what makes what makes our tutoring so popular with our students. Here we share some of the responses we received:

My tutor is very nice. I learn new things (that) I struggle with in my classroom.”
Year 6 pupil, Claremont Primary School, Manchester
I got better and feel more confident in maths lessons and I am now better at things I wasn't before.”
Year 6 pupil, Clarendon Road Primary School, Salford

And our primary school partners agree:

Tutor Trust tutors have been a fantastic asset to our school team, having had a positive impact on children's attainment and attitudes towards learning.”

SATS Support

Over the summer we’ll be working with our partner schools to gather SATs data and assess the impact of our tuition on our Year 6 pupils, which will then be included in our 2024 Impact Report. If you’d like to get your pupils Year 6 ready, why not take a look at our Puppies and Pirates scheme of work, designed to set pupils up for success in their SATs.
