In this episode, we look back at our unique 18-month partnership with the University of Manchester

'Local Matters: Poverty and Place' challenged us to look at how we engage with communities that we work within, and to challenge the views held on poverty. Hosted by project team members, Jude and Jason, we hear from Tutor Trust colleagues, including CEO Ed Marsh on the significance of the research on the organisation.

Speaking about the groundbreaking nature of the research, Ed says:

For an organisation like ours that explicitly exists to work to understand and eventually to eliminate poverty, it's really remarkable. Using education, tutoring, updating our language, updating our understanding, listening to our beneficiaries is absolutely critical. When we began the project a year ago, 3 million people were living in absolute poverty. So without the means to afford clothing, shelter, food, that figure has gone up by 300,000.

That conversation about poverty really couldn't be more important than it is at the moment. And I think historically charities have set out with the best of intentions, but quite often failed to understand the depth of what it is that they're trying to tackle

[This project} has given the organisation a really good grounding, and foundation for the work that we're trying to do.”
Ed Marsh, Tutor Trust CEO

Jude King

Internal Communications Manager

Jude started her career as a journalist, before moving into Internal Communications. She worked across a range of sectors including housing, health, insurance and local government.

Jude joined Tutor Trust as Communications Manager, and, as the staff team has expanded, has focused on developing internal communications within the charity, supporting colleagues to ensure tuition has the greatest impact. Jude is also part of the Poverty and Place Language Group, looking at how we commuicate and connect with our audiences.

Jude says: "I joined Tutor Trust in 2021 because it absolutely fits with my personal need to work for an organisation that is making a difference in the world and is focused on beneficiaries, not shareholders.  We have a supportive and caring staff team who share the mission to transform lives through tutoring, and who do all they can to make that happen. The job satisfaction is wonderful."

Jason first started working with us as a tutor in 2018 before working as a Tutoring Plus Full-Time Tutor, then as a Manchester Secondary Coordinator and most recently as Digital Communications Coordinator. He is also the editor of our very own podcast, Tutorcast.

Jason says: "Growing up in Greater Manchester, I was aware of the inequalities around me at school and was able to help counteract this when I took on a tuition assignment at my old primary school. Although I decided I didn’t want to teach in a classroom environment, I still enjoy working with young people and am glad to be able to help people from working-class backgrounds achieve their full potential.

"Outside of work, I am a volunteer editor for a mediation charity. I also spend a lot of time in the studio practising guitar and am a bit of a photography enthusiast!"
