Following our pioneering use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) pilot with the Hg Foundation and Bain and Company, we’re pleased to see the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has trialled this work further, with positive results.

Teachers using ChatGPT, alongside a guide we helped make to support them to use it effectively, can reduce their lesson planning time by 31%. This is according to the findings from a new trial published by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).

The independent evaluation of the trial, led by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), investigated teachers’ use of ChatGPT during lesson and resource planning and the impact on their workload.

In November 2023, ten of our tutors took part in a pioneering pilot using ChatGPT to support with their lesson planning at Manchester Academy – one of our long-standing school partners – and eight submitted the plans they used on the assignment for our standard lesson planning spot checks.

Using AI in lesson planning

Following our successful pilot, we now host workshops so tutors can use AI technologies whilst remaining confident that their lesson plans are high quality. We also have some learning modules about AI lesson planning on our tutor platform Thinqi.

We compared the quality of lesson plans submitted by those who took part in the pilot and all other tutors who underwent a lesson planning spot check. Despite our limited sample size, we saw promising first signs that lesson planning supported by AI tools could have a positive effect on the quality of the tuition being provided.

We’re pleased to see the results of EEF’s trial mirror some of those we saw with our own tutors. We’re continuing to explore new ways of using AI to enhance teaching and learning, trialling the effectiveness of these tools and evaluating the impact they have on teaching and learning.
